It's been years since we found a hard candy that met our intake standards on flower sourcing and (this is where it gets more difficult) contained no articificial colors, artificial flavors, high fructose corn syrup, or unsustainbly sourced palm oil.

But we found one! Tastys is doing it all right with their ingredients, and we couldn't be more excited 💚👌 They even have a variety of sub cannabinoids available, even CBC!

From 1940 to 1978, agriculture became polarized into organic and non-organic camps, with little communication between the two- and this is where we continue to exist today.

In the early 40s, Jerome Rodale, inspired by Sir Albert Howard's organic principles, purchased a farm in Pennsylvania and began promoting organic farming. In 1942, Rodale launched Organic Farming and Gardening magazine, which popularized organic concepts in the U.S. His books, like Pay Dirt and The Organic Front, further spread the message, framing organic farming as a battle against modern man-assisted methods.

These books were followed closely in release by Rodale's book, "The War in the Soil". Both Howard and Rodale saw the conflict of organic versus non-organic agriculture as a struggle between two different visions of what agriculture should become as they engaged in a war of words with the agricultural establishment.

Critics from the agricultural establishment dismissed organic advocates as "gloomy prophets" and "a cult," but modern research has disproven many of their arguments. Not only were those early arguments incorrect, but they also misrepresented the principles of organic farming as if it were defined by carbon (organic) chemistry rather than a philosophy of living systems.

As time has gone by and enough years have passed to see the long-term environmental and health effects, the fire behind organic farming has been rekindled, and research into the benefits of organic farming methods continues. A great documentary to check out would be Farmer's Footprints- where Zach Hall dives into the idea of accelerating regenerative agriculture as a means to restore human and planetary health. It's less than an hour, and it's on youtube.

As we continue on our journey through the history

As we continue on our journey through the history of organic gardening, we pay homage to Walter Northbourne, who was apparently the first to apply the word “organic” in application to farming. In 1940, Northbourne published an influential book, Look to the Land, in which he elaborated on the idea of the farm as an “organic whole”–in the philosophical sense “organic” refers to “having a complex but necessary interrelationship of parts, similar to that in living things.”

This concept of organic is similar in many respects to the holistic ideas more recently expressed by James Lovelock in the Gaia Hypothesis and Lynn Margulis in her book Symbiotic Planet, but on the smaller scale of a whole farm as a symbiotic unit.

In this respect, the organic farmer functions in concert with the symbiotic unit by being in daily contact with and having a feeling for the whole farm organism. It is also important to distinguish this meaning of “organic” as it applies to a system of farming from the common misunderstanding that “organic” specifically refers to the carbon based chemistry of the fertilizers that are often used in organic farming.

Our journey will continue next week as we dive into the polarization that began as the synthetic chemical version of nutrients became more prevalent in the 1940s, and the concept of organic farming began its first battle.

Ever spotted those vibrant yellow flowers in the forest? That’s Oregon Grape, a resilient plant native to our region. Its root has long been valued in herbal traditions for its grounding presence and earthy properties.

For you Wild harvesters out there: It can be found locally, and it's in season through December! The bark and root is most commonly added to topicals to promote healing or taken as a tincture to potentially assist with stomach issues.

Oregon Grape Root isn't for everyone, though. Berberine, a chemical in Oregon grape, can be harmful to children, especially newborns, and to pregnant or breastfeeding people.

Whether you're curious about its uses or just want to learn more about crafting with it, our herbalist Elena is here to chat about this amazing plant and how it fits into your wellness routine.

It's been years since we found a hard candy that met our intake standards on flower sourcing and (this is where it gets more difficult) contained no articificial colors, artificial flavors, high fructose corn syrup, or unsustainbly sourced palm oil.

But we found one! Tastys is doing it all right with their ingredients, and we couldn't be more excited 💚👌 They even have a variety of sub cannabinoids available, even CBC!

From 1940 to 1978, agriculture became polarized into organic and non-organic camps, with little communication between the two- and this is where we continue to exist today.

In the early 40s, Jerome Rodale, inspired by Sir Albert Howard's organic principles, purchased a farm in Pennsylvania and began promoting organic farming. In 1942, Rodale launched Organic Farming and Gardening magazine, which popularized organic concepts in the U.S. His books, like Pay Dirt and The Organic Front, further spread the message, framing organic farming as a battle against modern man-assisted methods.

These books were followed closely in release by Rodale's book, "The War in the Soil". Both Howard and Rodale saw the conflict of organic versus non-organic agriculture as a struggle between two different visions of what agriculture should become as they engaged in a war of words with the agricultural establishment.

Critics from the agricultural establishment dismissed organic advocates as "gloomy prophets" and "a cult," but modern research has disproven many of their arguments. Not only were those early arguments incorrect, but they also misrepresented the principles of organic farming as if it were defined by carbon (organic) chemistry rather than a philosophy of living systems.

As time has gone by and enough years have passed to see the long-term environmental and health effects, the fire behind organic farming has been rekindled, and research into the benefits of organic farming methods continues. A great documentary to check out would be Farmer's Footprints- where Zach Hall dives into the idea of accelerating regenerative agriculture as a means to restore human and planetary health. It's less than an hour, and it's on youtube.

As we continue on our journey through the history of organic gardening, we pay homage to Walter Northbourne, who was apparently the first to apply the word “organic” in application to farming. In 1940, Northbourne published an influential book, Look to the Land, in which he elaborated on the idea of the farm as an “organic whole”–in the philosophical sense “organic” refers to “having a complex but necessary interrelationship of parts, similar to that in living things.”

This concept of organic is similar in many respects to the holistic ideas more recently expressed by James Lovelock in the Gaia Hypothesis and Lynn Margulis in her book Symbiotic Planet, but on the smaller scale of a whole farm as a symbiotic unit.

In this respect, the organic farmer functions in concert with the symbiotic unit by being in daily contact with and having a feeling for the whole farm organism. It is also important to distinguish this meaning of “organic” as it applies to a system of farming from the common misunderstanding that “organic” specifically refers to the carbon based chemistry of the fertilizers that are often used in organic farming.

Our journey will continue next week as we dive into the polarization that began as the synthetic chemical version of nutrients became more prevalent in the 1940s, and the concept of organic farming began its first battle.

Ever spotted those vibrant yellow flowers in the forest? That’s Oregon Grape, a resilient plant native to our region. Its root has long been valued in herbal traditions for its grounding presence and earthy properties.

For you Wild harvesters out there: It can be found locally, and it's in season through December! The bark and root is most commonly added to topicals to promote healing or taken as a tincture to potentially assist with stomach issues.

Oregon Grape Root isn't for everyone, though. Berberine, a chemical in Oregon grape, can be harmful to children, especially newborns, and to pregnant or breastfeeding people.

Whether you're curious about its uses or just want to learn more about crafting with it, our herbalist Elena is here to chat about this amazing plant and how it fits into your wellness routine.
